Sitka Conservation Society has been using Sea Pony Farm, the homestead property gifted to the Living Wilderness Fund by Eric and Pam Bealer, to host creative retreats and as a field station for stewardship activities on surrounding Tongass National Forest lands. The Bealers asked that SCS use the property “to continue to help and protect this land that we so love.”
Our vision for the creative retreat and wilderness stewardship program we operate at Sea Pony Farm is to offer a wilderness retreat space for developing strategic partnerships with visiting artists, activists, writers, leaders, colleagues, individuals, and organizations we want to work with to accomplish our organization’s mission of protecting the Tongass and supporting sustainable communities. The program will host wilderness retreats in a way that offers an escape into the natural rhythms of the Tongass for restorative and creative pursuits.
The property is rustic and challenges the people who stay there with its remoteness, off-the-grid systems, proximity to wildlife, difficulties in accessing the space, vagaries in weather, and lack of the normal comforts and ease of what most people are accustomed to. We want to develop the place to exemplify living sustainability with the lands and waters of the Tongass National Forest by building and maintaining a safe and functional space that hosts visitors for an impactful, restorative, and educational stay in the West Chichagof-Yakobi Wilderness Area.
