For us it really is “the most wonderful time of the year.” We are huge Christmas people. The holidays are just so my jam. The singing, the lights, the smells (you know what I’m talking about). Winter jackets and scarves with hot chocolate in hand—I can practically hear Mariah Carey in the background. The events, the holiday movies, the family gatherings—all of it is just pure magic to me, and it’s only gotten better as a parent.
When I was a kid, I was afraid of doing Christmas as a grown-up. It just seemed so boring in comparison to the amazing holidays I got to enjoy as a child. And then I became a mom. Something about being able to experience the holidays through your children’s eyes is so special. Making their holidays magical with all your little tricks and Christmas traditions is something that brings more joy than I ever could have imagined.
But it’s a lot of work, there’s no denying that. There’s no rest for a mom during the holiday season, and for most people it starts long before the holidays actually begin. I would say that’s pretty universal. No matter what you celebrate, whatever traditions or plans you have, it’s work.
And then… there are the gifts. Hello, my friends! The overwhelm has arrived!
This is the thing: I love giving gifts. Giving gifts is my love language, and I absolutely love giving joy to someone else that way, especially when the gift is something I know they’ll really love. But I’m pretty much alone in our house when it comes to figuring out what to get. Jay buys presents like Joey and Chandler via Season 2, so I pretty much have to figure it out on my own.
And then to top it off, we have a lot of kids to gift shop for. Honestly, this is the only time of year when I really do feel like we have a lot of kids to deal with—five of them, and four with very specific likes and dislikes and lists beyond lists of requests.
If you have older kids, you know exactly how it goes… Either a quick “Oh mom, you know what I want for Christmas? It’s [insert popular kid’s toy]” during the most inconvenient moment, when I can barely hear them. Or they’ll write it on a random piece of paper, leave it on the counter, where it gets moved or lost… and then we start the whole cycle over again. It’s nearly impossible to get a good idea of what they want when it comes to toys for Christmas.
