Are you picking china patterns with your fiancee? When I went to pick mine, I made sure to get something that would match my mothers china. This way when I eventually get her china, I will have patterns that coordinate for huge family gatherings.

I would have my fiancee's input but, since men aren't usually interested the "girly" aspects of life, I would make the final decision.
I don't really like having sets that all match and prefer to have separate place settings that compliment each other. It makes the table more interesting.

Sorry, when I wrote matching patterns, I meant a pattern that complimented my moms pattern. This way I can put a different pattern at every other place. It looks so elegant that way too~ I tried it.

I know exactly what you mean by mixing and matching different sets of china. I think Vera Wang and Martha Stewart China compliment each other very well. For instance these two designs:
